The Bible says that we must fight the good fight of faith in 1 Timothy 6:12. It further says in the same verse, “Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses”. When we got born again, we became the enemies of the devil. How many times have we been told that he cares not for those who do not belong to Jesus Christ, who do not proclaim Him as their Lord and Saviour because they are not a danger to him.
He knows his ultimate end and that he is defeated by Jesus Christ and those who do not know this truth cannot proclaim the good news set in Colossians 1:27 which says, “For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory”. When Christ lives in you, you are a threat to the devil because he knows what happened to him when he rebelled against God. Jesus said to His disciples in Luke 10:18, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”. He came plummeting from heaven right to hell.
He is still fighting and because he knows that he is doomed for hell forever, he wants to take as many people with him as possible. If he pokes you, he wants you to react contrary to the nature of Christ that is in you that you may reject the Lord. He is looking for people whom he can cause to renounce the Lord. The Bible warns us in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”. When you lose sight of what is important, the enemy pounces and some never recover from this attack.
He clutches his claws and never let’s go hence we have to be vigilant all the time and be ready. In Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus tells us the parable of the 10 virgins who went to meet the bridegroom. The Bible says five were foolish while the other five were wise. “The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’”
Watchfulness is key in everything so that you may not be caught off guard. Check where your focus is always. In Matthew 6:21 Jesus also teaches us to “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. What you focus on, has a direct bearing on what happens to you next. I have been poked by the devil and he pokes all of us all the time. John 10:10 says, “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy”, that is his mission all the time. He wants to steal your peace by throwing in sickness, worries, anger jealously and the like.
In Galatians 5:19, Paul teaches us how the devil operates. He says, “the acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God”. If the devil pushes you to do these things and be that way he wins.
He wants to cause strive all the time, when a husband is always drunk, he causes disharmony in the family and when he does, the devil is happy. When you are feeling depressed, he can even whisper in your mind to take it further and commit suicide, that there is no hope for you. As long as you do not seek the Lord, he is content. He knows that the light of God will save you and he prevent you from following that light.
God is good all the time which means that only good can come from Him and nothing to the contrary. When you are ill, it is not God who is making you sick for the Bible says in Isaiah 53:5, “But He (Jesus) was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed”.
The devil tempted Adam in the Garden of Eden and he got away with it because man fell from grace but when the second Adam came along, Jesus, He redeemed us and set us free from the clutches of the devil. So, we need not concentrate on the challenges and the negative things that are happening in our lives but to put our attention on the promises of God.
God has promised us good health right through old age. Psalm 92:14 says, “They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green” and Isaiah 46:4 “Even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save”. We are meant to reach our old age fully capacitated and able. This is the gift for the children of God. We are meant to live prosperous and successful, spirit, body, and soul throughout our lives.
Jesus confirms it in John 10:10 and says, “I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly”. This is the destiny of the chosen of God and everyone can decide to be amongst those because salvation is for all and it is freely given. I have had a pain on my shoulder for months and am not willing to give up. I know the plot of the devil and that is to get me down, but he will not succeed because I know the promises of God and declare them.
I am a thousand steps ahead; I am awake and aware. There are times when I wanted to give up but realised that as soon as I give up, he wins, so I will not back down. The Bible in Hebrews 10:23 says, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful”. When you get to a point of struggle in your life, always remember the goodness of the Lord. Focus on the things that God has done for you and this will lift your spirit.
Look at how He fought for you in similar circumstances and remind Him of His Word. He says in Isaiah 55:11, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it”. We need to remind ourselves of what the Word of God says and stand on it no matter what, and it will come to pass. While we stand, we should rejoice, praise, and give thanks for that is God’s will for our lives.
Praise and gratitude are powerful because they remind us of the many times that God came through for us. You need to renounce your trust in human beings and place it on God wholeheartedly. David was good at it because he knew that it works. He was attacked by his enemies as well because he wore the crown. He was anointed by God; he was chosen and the enemy attacks the anointed of God but that is more reason to stand and show the devil who you belong to.
The devil is throwing jabs and he is enjoying it, he is pushing you so hard that you give in. He wants you to throw in the towel but forgets that Jesus has already fought for you and defeated him. Paul says in Romans 8: 37-39, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.
You have God’s stamp of approval, never forget that and the kingdom of God includes everything that you desire, if its health, God has it for you, if it is a longing for a child, He can fulfil that, don’t give in to the punches, if it is companionship you need, God won’t deny you, keep believing, if it is a home of your own, keep on believing. He has it all. Amen
