The grace of God is something that took me time to understand and it bears repeating on this blog. I have learnt from one special spiritual teacher that repetition is the art of understanding. You need to repeat information that you deem important for comprehension until people get it. There are times when I too forget what grace really mean, so I am reminding myself as well.
I have been a spiritual student for years and somewhere along my journey I came across the teachings of karma that fascinated me very much and appealed to my consciousness. I would often wonder why people would commit heinous crimes and in Christianity we would be told that if we confess Jesus as our lord and saviour then the slate is then wiped clean. One of my pastors used to say during the altar call that suppose that you leave the church unsaved and then get run over by a car and you die without receiving Jesus, you won’t know where you will be at the moment of your death but if you accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour, even if you were a bad person according to the standards of this world you will go to heaven instantly. I always found this difficult to accept and he would say it every Sunday.
I attended church twice a day as we had two services one in the morning and the other in the evening at 18:00 p.m. and would go home in a state of disbelieve every time. It is because I was routed in karma that no one gets away with anything until I understood what Jesus did on the cross. I had been a Christian for some time but my mind would shut every time we get to that message especially how the pastor put it. I thought that God would be unjust to let bad people go free having committed crimes, lied and cheated over the years and hurt people terribly, by just accepting Jesus in their lives. I mean think about it from the carnal mind and you would see what I mean but once you get the revelation of the power of the cross everything then changes.
Perhaps I had forgotten that I too fell short of the glory of God and had sinned. I was looking at the speck in others eyes without first removing the log in my own eye. Perhaps it was not even the speck or the log, it was simply a lack of understanding and ignorance. I had to grow to a certain level for me to understand the knowledge. I had to give God what was in my hand so that He would open my eyes. I was like a young man who was walking with the Prophet of God, Elisha. I was hearing the Word twice every Sunday but yet could not comprehend. I was naïve. The Bible says that when the king of Syria made war against Israel, he sent horses and chariots and a great army to surround the city of Dothan and capture Elisha. When Elisha’s servant went outside in the morning, the city was surrounded and he was afraid as he asked Elisha what they should do.
This is what Elisha said to him, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha (2Kings 6: 16-17).
It’s always a matter of seeing in the spirit that we may be enlightened. God is no man, He doesn’t think like us. In Isaiah 55:8-9 the bible says “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
“O Lord, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep” (Psalm 92:5).
“Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered (Psalm 40:5)”.
I must say that karma seemed understandable in the sense that whatever you do, one way or the other, you would pay for it, it’s in your own account and you would have to work it out or repay somehow. This seemed fair to me but when I read the above scriptures I realise that I knew nothing and am still a learner. God’s thoughts are very deep but with grace Jesus washes away all iniquity of the past, present and the future. God remembers your iniquity no more and so there is no reason to hang on to anything especially guilt. You are released from guilt; however grace is not a license to sin again and do wrong. When a woman who had been caught committing adultery was brought to Jesus the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus that according to the law of Moses she must be stoned and Jesus said to them “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
Those who were there were convicted by their own conscience that neither threw a stone and they all left leaving the woman with Jesus who said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, “No one, Lord.”
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more” (John 8:10-11).
Jesus forgave the sins of the woman and advised her not to sin anymore and just keep it clean, no condemnation, no judgement and no accusation from Jesus. This is the grace of the Lord, who is full of mercy. The bible says that His mercies are renewed every day and they endures for ever. Something that endures, is ever lasting, so God’s mercy continues through to eternity. It is reliable because every morning you receive another portion from the beginning. Jesus said to the woman at the well who He had asked for water that “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life (John 4:13-14).”
What God gives is never ending, He gives over and over again without tiring, without impatience in His heart, He further said “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). We all slip into forgetfulness every now and then, however, if we can always be in remembrance of the Word of God, we would remain in a state of pure joy and happiness all the time not even have an inclination to sin. We would be as Adam and Eve were, before sin came into being. They were in a constant state of grace and never had to lift a finger. In Joshua 24: 13-14 the Word of the Lord says, “I have given you a land for which you did not labour, and cities which you did not build, and you dwell in them; you eat of the vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant. “Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord!
Once we understand and receive the grace of the Lord, everything becomes available to us the same way it was in paradise. We literally enjoy heaven on earth whereas with karma we pay for what we did, in grace, we don’t have to do anything except diligently serve the Lord and walk in his ways. He said that He will make our paths rights. Provision of all kinds is guaranteed when we walk with the Lord. Our prayer is a prayer of thanksgiving as we acknowledge what God has already done for us. When the mind opens up to this knowledge, everything falls into place all by itself.
Jesus carried all of our accounts on His shoulders and nailed them on the cross. He is offering us a simpler way of living which is not burdensome, that is what I have realised when I understood grace, that whatever I thought I should work for and repay, He did all of that for me that I may rest in Him. He says in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Once you get the revelation of the cross and Jesus’s words you are set free, for when the Son of Man sets you free you are free indeed (John 8:36). You don’t have to look back or sideways, you only have to look forward right at the path that He gives you for He knows the way. He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He chooses the road signs and above all, He drives while you sit on the side and relax. You take multiple naps on the road when you allow Him to drive, He wakes you up when you reach your destination. Surrendering all to Him is not for His benefit but ours.
Grace is such a full package and the fruits of grace are great. Pray for the revelation of grace in your life. We do not know and understand the power we already have and so allow the devil to walk all over us, making us feel guilty all the time, we are often blinded and live in conditions not worthy of the children of God because we don’t have the full revelation. In grace, your past definitely doesn’t define your present and your future is always bright. God’s love is really unconditional, no buts when it comes to His provision.
I am grateful that I received grace in my life, more so that I received the revelation of this grace. It is unfolding every day as there are areas in my life that still needs to soak. There are habits that I have to drop as I soak deeper and deeper into grace.
Thank you Lord.
