God loves us without any condition, which is what unconditional love of God mean. Often, we talk casually about the love of God and yet the knowledge of this love doesn’t marinade in our minds fully. God demonstrates his love every day and we frequently miss it. Besides the obvious things that we see around us, that gives our lives meaning like families; the plants, animals and the breath of life, there are unlimited ways in which God validates His love for us.
The above title, were the words said by the angel of the Lord to Elijah. Elijah was running for his life away from Jezebel. He had slain all the false prophets with his sword and Jezebel promised to get back at him and so he fled as he was afraid that he would be killed. The Bible says he journeyed in the desert, came to a broom tree, sat down and bemoaned that he should die. “I have had enough, Lord”, he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors”. The Bible tells us that as soon as he had finished praying he laid down and fell asleep.
“All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night” (1 King 19: 5-9).
God takes care of us because we are His children, even when we find ourselves in the thick of things. He always has a way out. He ministers to our spirits in time of need when things seem to be going wrong in all direction. I have had countless times when I didn’t feel like going to church because of the woes in my life. I would find myself angry at God for things happening around me that I don’t wish to happen. I would spiral in depression and decide not to go to church but rather sleep and wallow in self-pity. Those are actually the moments and days where you need to get up, take a bath and force yourself to go. As soon as I enter the church and hear the Word and fellowship with brethren, my soul jumps up for joy and my outlook completely changes. It’s like God is saying, ‘my child, get up and eat’.
I never leave the church the same, God ministers to me through His messengers and the brethren. I would think ‘my God, what if I never left my home, I wouldn’t be feeling this light hearted and filled with renewed hope’. Do yourself a favour, whenever you feel down and out, go to church, read your Holy Book or inspirational material you have in your house, watch a spiritual programme or listen to a sermon or a spiritual teaching, talk to somebody who will encourage you and raise your inner man. God brings people in your life and communicates in a variety of ways to inspire your soul. Heed to the messages or else you will be sucked in by the spirit of despair and discouragement. Once you are in the quarry, it is really difficult to get out. I know so because I have been there. Get up and eat the Word of life from God.
God watches over us and the Bible says that He looks over His Word to perform it in your life (Jeremiah 1:12). God still had a mission for Elijah to fulfil and wouldn’t have let him be killed by Jezebel. He needed to anoint Elisha to follow him and take the reigns as soon as his divine appointment was fulfilled. Have you really thought and asked God what is the assignment that He wants you to fulfil? Why are you here on earth? Our purpose on earth is to unfold the divine plan of God. We need to go before the Lord and seek Him and find out what He has earmarked us to do. He says that “ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened” (Matthew 7: 7-8).
I believe that whatever is your passion, something that you do with effortless grace, is what you were born to do on earth. God inspires you to do the things that He Himself wants to accomplish through you. Not all of us are meant to stand in the pulpit and preach, writing this blog is ministering in another form as the blog is Holy Spirit inspired, my portion is to write and fulfil God’s purpose by reaching out to others in this particular way. Paul in the Bible says that we should walk worthy of the calling with which we are called. There are those who have been called into large business contracts and whichever deal they get into, turns to gold, because God has a purpose with that business and it always has to do with His children in a broader way. There are others who are called to worship, they sing their lungs out in different genres, and we have painters who have been given the gift to paint the scenery as they see it. You would even wish to enter the painting by just looking at it.
God has given us gifts, “to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift (Ephesians 4:7). “He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13).
Elisha had to be raised through Elijah fulfilling the mission that God had assigned him, otherwise Elisha would still be ploughing with oxen in his father’s field. Perhaps God could have raised someone else to anoint Elisha had Elijah decided to sit in the wilderness and refused to get up and eat what the angel of the Lord had prepared for him. He needed the strength to continue on the mission that God had prepared for him. As soon as he got up and ate, rested, he continued on his journey. Elijah had to hand over the mantle to Elisha who also had to fulfil yet another divine mission.
All of this God did out of His love for His children. He said in His Word that He will never leave us nor forsake us but He will always be there for us. He gives us His very best from nothing at all. He manifests things right in front of us. On the day that I was attending the sale of work with my children that I mentioned on the blog of the 4th September 2017, we had to purchase tickets to use at the sale and I used most of them to purchase things for my children but surprisingly when I dug into my pocket to take the last remaining, there were more tickets and I was certain that no one put them there. I had been walking on my own at that time and decided to go watch the fashion show that was arranged for the lower grades and I had these extra tickets in my pocket and the first thought was that ‘God manifests anything from nothing’ and I gave praises unto God. The carnal mind would find it difficult to comprehend but if you walk in the Spirit, you would stand in awe. We serve a mighty living God who still performs miracles to this day. Miracles didn’t end in biblical times, God still demonstrates His power in ways that we can never fathom. He is a good God always and if we hang on to His goodness, acknowledge it, give thanks for it, more will be poured unto us.
Brethren, God never fails. We haven’t even begun to understand the many things He has in store for us. He always has an ace up his sleeve. You will never keep up. All you got to do is trust Him and walk with Him. He fed multitudes of people with only five loaves and two fish and multiplied them. Neither of the people who were sitting there listening to Jesus’ sermon would have guessed how their provision would come about. As Elijah was sleeping, he himself never predicted that God would bake for him right there in the wilderness and present him with food out of nowhere. There were no shops around because God Himself was the shop and the supplier, He drew everything from the invisible and placed it in the visible were people could see, feel and touch it. Everything was already there, He just called it forth, He just pulled it.
For a second, I caught myself in my head thinking, ‘I would like to do things as God does them, I would like to manifest things into the natural from the supernatural’ and quickly remembered the words of Jesus when He said that we absolutely can, and even do more than He did. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it”.
I know that we are taught that we serve a Mighty God. The chorus goes “Let us go and praise the Lord and what a Mighty God we serve” but it seem to me that it is the other way round, the Mighty God seem to be serving us more than we do Him. There is a popular poem called “The footprints in the sand” by Mary Fishback Powers and in the poem the only footprints that could be seen at the end where God’s carrying His own child. When you grow weary, God surely carries you and soothes you, He serves you, He says ‘my child, get up and eat’ and makes the food for you.
“What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:9).
Allow God to minister to your soul today and get up and eat His Word which is life. The Sesotho hymn says “Bophelo ke wena fela, empa batho ha ba tsebe, ba lahlehetswe ke tsela, ba kgelositswe ke sebe” meaning, You are life itself Lord and yet people don’t know, they have lost the way, and have fallen into sin.
My heart is filled with gratitude knowing that with God, I cannot fail. Amen.
