Friends of ours are relocating to Norway at the end of the year. The announcement didn’t come as a surprise to me as when we met at the local pharmacy two months ago, they did hint that they were considering this move.
The wife alluded to Europe having numerous job opportunities in her field and this move seemed like a logical step to follow. The husband also, has roots in Europe, and their kids are still young and in the foundation phase so uprooting them at this moment is a breeze.
They have found a school for the kids on the other side who will be starting before the end of the year and progressing to the next grade. This is wonderful and I feel excited for them as they start a new chapter in their lives.
When I informed my youngest daughter, who is a friend to theirs, she was sad and I gave her a word of comfort that perhaps someday they would meet again as young adults and the get together would be terrific as they reminisce about the things they used to do back in school. I think it would be fun if they can still remember each other then. It would be just like in the movies when people meet after a very long time.
As I was processing the news about this transfer alone at home, I thought about the greatness of God and how He sets things up in His own way and when time has come for you to shift, He will give you a gentle nudge.
When I met with this lady friend of mine at one of the cafés late last year and had a chat while awaiting both our daughters who were attending a birthday party there, she had mentioned that she was contemplating a transfer to Grahamstown for a lecturing position at Rhodes University but the husband was reluctant to relocate. She therefore, couldn’t make a decision on her own and declined the position.
The husband grew up in Johannesburg and moved to Bloemfontein where they met and started a family. He’s been at his job for many years and was settled and to move again to Grahamstown where he didn’t know anybody was not in his cards. His friends and support system were in Bloemfontein and he was not prepared to give that all up considering the fact that the wife was travelling a lot and he needed help with the children.
So, the Grahamstown move literally failed and they moved on from that subject. Now, things have changed again and the wife has been offered a lucrative job opportunity overseas and it is difficult to resist and even so, the husband was recently laid off at work due to the hard-hit economy resulting from the current worldwide pandemic.
The decision to relocate therefore, was an easy one to make as there was nothing holding him back anymore. God nudges us in different ways and for him it was the loss of his job that he had been holding to for years. This job has been the source of his income and the family and now that things have changed, he had to change with things.
All of us don’t know how things will turn up in our lives but need to trust that God knows what He is doing and will always come through for us no matter what. For believers, it should be an easy thing to fathom because we know that God is always with us under all circumstances. His presence goes before us every single day.
What He did for us in the past and for others, He can always replicate and do it again. Nothing is too hard for the Lord. He is the same yesterday, today and always (Hebrews 13:8). We have to rely on God for sustenance otherwise things will be tough for us. When certain things have to happen, He will find a way to make it easy for us to accept and see the grandness of the design.
When we look at our lives and the things that have happened to us, we always see the goodness of God and how He has spearheaded things for us and have been working at things for a very long time.
All that we need to have is patience and trust that God will do it again. We are often caught up in worry and anxiety and the Bible says in Matthew 7:9-11, “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
God will never leave us to struggle but sometimes He allows it because He knows what He has in store for us. At times, struggle is imperative to propel us forward and other times, things don’t work out to make way for the things that need to come to us, things that God has prepared for us. There is always divine order in everything if you look close enough.
Romans 8:28, says, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose”. Sometimes delay is not denial. This friend of mine could have suffered disappointment for the husband’s refusal to relocate to Grahamstown, however, something better was coming.
The position that she received now is much higher than the one she was supposed to assume at Rhodes University and the pay even better. Things are working out for them and the employer is making it easy for them to integrate effortlessly into the new community.
She has been travelling back and forth between South Africa and Europe and sometimes the USA but has finally made her choice to settle in Europe instead. She has had the time to acquaint herself with some of these countries she has travelled to and in that sense, would make it comfortable for her husband and children too with the network of friends she has acquired.
When we met at the pharmacy the last time, she actually hinted on moving to Ireland, but that didn’t work out either as the children had to be at school in September and she felt that it was too soon and putting things in place at that time was difficult but this move was easier and everything that came with it. How amazing is our God?
God is good to all of us and we should never doubt His ability to protect and provide for us. You might be going through difficult times at the moment and wondering if there is a God and I can attest that He is always there.
We all have access to Him equally so and when we call on Him, He hears from heaven. We need to repent from all unrighteousness for, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:17-18).
God can make something from nothing meaning that your situation is not hopeless. He can fulfil your dreams. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart”.
What is your heart’s desire today? Be encouraged even if you have lost all hope that God is never defeated and it is not over for you until God says so. If you find yourself in trouble with people also, “do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).
It doesn’t matter how fearful the situation you are facing is and even if people are hunting you down, know that you have God on your side and He will fight for you.
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” Isaiah 43:2-3
Surrender your life to God today and know that He has your back.
