On 10 January 2017 I was inspired to read the first chapter of Genesis in the Bible and verses 11 - 25 struck a chord with me. I felt like I was receiving divine revelation as many other scriptures that resonated with what I was reading began pouring in my mind. Verse 11 says:
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. The trend from there is the creation of the sea creatures, the birds and the animals, all according to their kind.
God created diversity right from the beginning of creation, a variety of different species of plants and all living things on earth. If you read in the New Testament you find yet another inspiring verse in 1 Corinthans 15:41, that says “There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory”. The range that God created even extends to the different lights in the heavens and these vary according to their glory. Their splendour was not made equal but yet not insignificant. God is the Creator after all and can do anything He wants. A creator has complete control over what he creates; he has the plan, the scope, the means, the right and authority over his creation. He can model as he pleases and how he sees fit.
On the other hand, we have seasons, days, months and years and each is no similar to the previous or the next. The events, circumstances and experiences of each day, differs. I have a ritual that I use at the end of every month and the beginning of the new one. I thank that month for having served me whichever way it did and welcome the new month, baptise it a success and thank it for serving me for the next 30 or 31 days. I do this daily as I have to record all experiences in my gratitude journal to be able to honour that month when it comes to an end.
When God created man on the sixth day, He gave him dominion over the fish, the birds, the animals and the creeping things. He gave him all types of vegetation too and nowhere in the scriptures do we hear that there was competition among all of these or are we told about the order of their importance. Every species of every living thing is as important to God as the other.
The fragrance of the rose is no better than that of the carnation
The growling bear is no better than the bellowing cow
The chirping bird is no better than the squawking mouse
No plant for food is the same nor grows in the same season
God created it all in different ways for us humans and for His enjoyment too.
You see, we were created in the image and likeness of God, and He also created us different with unique features according to race, height, figure, complexion and the like. Those with the know-how maintain that there are six basic classifications of skin tone; light, fair, medium, olive, tan-brown and black-brown. God goes to the minutest detail to display His unlimited abilities with just a single aspect of existence.
He created others with particular fine and delicate features whereas others are rough and strong. It tells me that He enjoyed the process of creating and if He delighted in creating, that means He delighted in his own creation and still does. Otherwise he would create a different species of humans and we would cease to exist as we are now. So far, my features are still the same, meaning that God is pleased with me and of course you. If you were making a clay pot and made a mistake, you would recreate or remodel whenever is necessary.
We are finished products in God’s eyes and so is everything else and if His likeness is in us that means we can do what He can do. In 1 Corinthians 1:5, it says that “we have been enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge … so that we don’t come short in no gift”. We always see lack in ourselves, forgetting all that God has imparted in us. My husband often says that since all of us are God’s children, then no man should place himself as a standard above the others to be followed or copied. If someone has the so-called fashion sense and dresses in a particular way, then there’s no reason to believe that that is the best or only way of dressing up. We have different tastes according to what God has given us. It also doesn’t justify sloppiness and we need to be modest.
The moon never questions the rising of the sun nor the stars question their variation of glory, they twinkle the best way they can and all to the glory of God. God calls the sun the greater light that rules the day and the moon the lesser light that rules the night. There is great intelligence and a deep understanding of the different roles each element plays to keep everything in place in the universe; the solar system, the galaxies, the ecosystem and all that is required for perfect universal functionality. There is no struggle and we shouldn’t struggle with ourselves and each other too.
We also have been created to glorify God and we should be like stars, shine in countless ways, that’s how God receives His glory. Like the moon and the sun, we have prominent gifts in us and some that are lying dormant and need to be activated and honed. All of these, serve God’s purpose and when combined, creates the Oneness and completes the picture.
I often tell my nine and six year old daughters that God is very clever. He is a genius. My kids enjoyed watching child genius competition with me some time ago and I said to them that God imparted knowledge in those kids which is above the intelligence of the normal nine or ten year old child and they shouldn’t in anyway compare themselves with those kids. As parents, we need to harness what God has implanted in our children without pressuring them to be like others. They need to know that they have different gifts and encourage them to do well in their studies and even help them, however, there will always be a child that is smarter than the other but is not athletic, one that can swim very well but can’t sing, a great artist but finds it difficult to play a musical instrument and so on.
I am also amazed about how God takes the human body and give different talents and abilities to medical professionals. He created the complete physiology of a human being but gives different skills to everyone and a particular area of focus. In the scope of medicine you find neurologists, dermatologists, cardiologists and all are specialists in the particular aspects of the human body and not the entire body. God Himself is the Master physician who can handle all of these because he created every atom, cell, neuron, organ, system and so forth. He can handle any kind of complication.
God took His own image and likeness and divided that into smaller pieces forming different categories and degrees of operation. We therefore need to celebrate everything on earth that God has created and celebrate our very own differences because there is glory in all of us humans including all of God’s creation. When He completed every task including the creation of every species of living things He saw that it was good, but when He completed all of them collectively and finally man, He saw that it was “very good”.
Let us honour the tall and the short, the heat and the cold, the genius and the average, the red and the blue, the bold and the meek. All serves the divine purpose.
When we learn to celebrate each other; jealousy, envy, strife, worry, fear, hatred, bitterness, anger and resentment disappears. We would simply enjoy God in all of His magnificence as He created all things according to their kind. Be grateful for who you are and who another is!
